History

A Hindu temple (Mandir, Devasthanam, Pura, Kshetram, Ambalam, Kovil) is the sacred house of the god to whom it is dedicated. Its architecture, rooted in later Vedic traditions, makes extensive use of squares and circles and employs astronomical numbers and particular alignments tied to location and the deity–worshipper relationship. The design expresses recursion and the equivalence of macrocosm and microcosm and symbolically presents elements of the Hindu cosmos and life goals such as dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

Spiritual Significance

Considered the house of the deity, the temple is a focal point for devotion; its symbolic layout and alignments aim to connect the worshipper with cosmic principles and the goals of life.

Spiritual Practices

Worship, sacrifice, and prayers; devotees show devotion to deities.
