History
Bairat Temple is a freestanding Buddhist Chaityagriha located about a mile southwest of Viratnagar on a hill called Bijak-ki-Pahari in Rajasthan. The circular shrine comprises a central stupa surrounded by a circular colonnade and an enclosing wall. It was built during the time of Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Two of Ashoka's Minor Rock Edicts (the Bairat and the Calcutta-Bairat edicts) were found nearby. It is regarded as the earliest circular Buddhist shrine and an important marker in the development of Indian architecture.
Spiritual Significance
Significant as the earliest known circular Buddhist shrine; architecturally centered on a stupa and important for Buddhist religious architecture.
