History
Hanuman, also known as Maruti, Bajrangabali, and Anjaneya, is a divine vanara and companion of Lord Rama. Central to the Ramayana, he is considered a chiranjivi and the spiritual offspring of the wind-god Vayu. While tales of Hanuman appear in the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various Puranas, devotional practices centered on him were not prominent in early archaeological evidence. His theological significance and a devoted following emerged roughly a millennium after the Ramayana was composed, during the second millennium CE.
