History
Nova was a high-power laser built at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California, United States, commissioned in 1984 and dismantled in 1999. It was the first inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiment explicitly intended to reach ignition. Although it did not achieve ignition, Nova demonstrated that Rayleigh–Taylor instability was the principal obstacle, informed the design of the National Ignition Facility, and produced valuable high-density matter physics data for fusion and weapons research.
