Tirupperunthurai, located in Avudaiyarkoil village, was built in the 10th century to honor Lord Shiva. Manikkavasagar's Tiruvasakam, a sacred text of Tamil Saiva Siddhanta, originated from this shrine. Manikkavasagar is credited with converting the king to follow Shiva and constructing the temple using funds originally intended for war-horses.
