History
The temple, located to the west within the fort of Vidisha, is believed to have been one of the largest temples in the country during its time. It was first mentioned in 1024 by the scholar Al-Biruni who accompanied Mahmud of Ghazni. Literary evidence suggests it was half a mile long and 105 yards high, with visible domes from afar. Two outer gates have also been identified.
