History
The temple, located within the fort of Vidisha, is believed to have been one of the largest temples in the country during its time. It was first mentioned in 1024 by the scholar Al-Biruni, who accompanied Mahmud of Ghazni. Literary evidence suggests it was half a mile long and 105 yards high, with visible domes from a distance. The temple had two outer gates and was a site of continuous worship and pilgrimage.
