The 27 Nakshatras and their ruling planets

nakshatra

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal segments of the zodiac, each spanning 13°20′, through which the Moon travels. Together they divide the ecliptic into the lunar mansions that underpin much of Vedic astrology, including the Vimshottari Dasha.

Each nakshatra has a ruling graha. The nine lords repeat in the same order (Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury) three times across the 27 nakshatras — which is why the Moon's birth nakshatra sets the starting Vimshottari period.
